Mirena Coil? Thinking about getting the Mirena Coil....we use condoms at the moment and they are no problem..just worried about the discomfort to start with, if my periods will be bad for awhile (getting married soon and dont want problems!!) If my partner will feel it and i used to get really bad migraines when i used to take the pill...so will i get them back?? any experienced users please comment!!

ME!! replied: "Not a user - but i know people who are. Its unlikely you will get the symptoms that you did when on the pill. You would have to speak to your doctor about it though. They are often reluctant to fit the coil if you havent had children. But, will do it, if you have very bad, irregular periods, not always as a form of contraception, and as I understand, the procedure is not very comfortable at all. But talk to your doctor about this. Its worth going just to get their opinion, and establish whether you would be a suitable candidate for it fitting. Good luck."

JS replied: "I have it and love it. Couldn't take the pill because I was unbearable to live with while on it. I have had children so placement for me was easy. I had off and on spotting (more on then off) for the first six months. Wasn't a big deal more of an annoyance then anything..........nothing a pantyliner wouldn't take care of. I haven't had a real period since getting the Mirena...........just spotting once a month."

nadia.swain replied: "I have been on the mirena for 3 1/2 years & it is fantastic! I suffer from migranes & this does not set off any reaction, there is no cramping & no major periods - the only thing you should be concerned about is if you want children, it is best not to go onto it until you have had kids as it is more effective than sterilisation & can affect you. Hope this is helpful!! It is just like getting a pap smear when it is put in & you cant feel it afterwards, so no problems there."

Tiss replied: "If you're just getting married, you may not be able to use an IUD. Most doctors require that you've had at least one child before they insert one."

Implanon Implant or Mirena Coil: has anyone tried? I am due to get one of these fitted in the next 2 weeks due to heavy/severe periods and progesterone only pills not working for me (suffer from migraines so cant do combined pill). I am 23 and have never had kids. Has anyone tried these and what was your experience?? What were your periods like before? I am slightly worried about weight gain as I am currently a weight I like being at and I exercise regularly.

Should I ask for the Mirena Coil or steer clear? Im 22 had problems with my periods for as long as I can remember: heavy to the point of fainting, bad cramping, lasting for 10 days, come every 6 weeks, severe pms causing depression around that time. Then when they are gone I am back to my same old happy self and I think "wow what just happened". IT is the same old viscious cycle and its grinding me down. Anyway doc has tried me on various progestin pills because i suffer from migraines and cannot take oestrogen pills. Last pill I was on was Femulen - at one point I felt I was having a stroke as my whole face went numb and had the worst migraine ever! I came off it and now I am looking for answers. Should I ask my doc to refer me to a gyno? I keep getting put on pills that are making me bleed and be miserable. The doc said the last option is the Mirena Coil, I want to have a hysteroscope to see whats going on??? I have already had an ultrasound and everything was fine. What should I do? I think these hormones make me mad, interfere with my life, I lose the will to live, exercise and be happy - instead I just want to stay in bed, cry and eat chocolate.

chezzer replied: "i had exactly the same problem and i got the implant in my arm i haven't had a period in a year i never get stressy or have mood swings and i have nad no side effects its a painless procedure unlike the coil because they just numb your arm and that's it for 3 years (unless you wish to have it out earlier) its been such a life changing thing for me and i would recommend it to anyone. i hope this helps you as it helped me, its also an excellent contraceptive as i have found out"

Moem replied: "It's worth a try... it worked very well for me. The hormonal dosage is very low compared to the pill, so that may help. It's hard to say how it will work for you, of course. But I've used it for about ten years and liked it just fine. The only reason I'm off it now is that my man has had his tubes tied."

Last option is Mirena coil - What should I do? This is a long one sorry. I'm 22 - have had heavy, painful periods for as long as I remember. Severe pmt, anemia and general bit*ch syndrome every time my period comes. Every month it is just getting worse - my family & my boyfriend suffer because of my moods. I also cannot leave the house for the first 2 days as it is just too heavy. When the period is over I am back to my calm, happy self and wonder what the heck had just happened?! Anyway I suffer from occasional migraines and I cannot take combined oral contraceptives (anything containing estrogen) as there is a risk of stroke. So I have tried many progesterone pills - NONE work and the last one I had a migraine for 3 days and the whole left side of my body was numb. Doc is still not referring me to gynae and thinks I should try the Mirena coil now before gynae?!! I have never had any kids so I am quite apprehensive and read so many horror stories. Any advice would be appreciated?! yup tried mef & tran acid and both didnt help

maz replied: "i had 1 fitted 2 1/2 years ago, i went from really heavy periods that lasted 2 plus weeks each time and i couldn't really go any were cos they were so heavy to 2 weeks light spotting 2 weeks off. 4 me i'm much better off now and i do know that for some people the periods stop all together. it is pain full when they fit it but last mins in my case, i'd say its defiantly worth trying, u can always have it removed if it doesn't help u. hope that helps :-)"

Rhea replied: "I hope the doc has already gone through mefenamic acid and tranexamic acid options before suggesting mirena, although I'm not sure of the significance of migraine for these options. Mirena is usually only advised for women who have had a child already, due to the need to dilate the cervix for insertion. It also advises 'caution' in women with migraines. Personally, I'd insist on the gynae referral so I could speak to someone with more experience than the GP."

judy l68 replied: "I've had a Mirena coil since the year 2000. They were only just being trialed and I was one of the first women in the country to have one. I had to have it inserted by a specialist doctor in a womens hospital because no GPs or GPs nurses were trained to do it then and I've never looked back!! It was the best thing I ever did to help my problem periods. It is uncomfortable at first but it REALLY works. I went to the GP to see what could be done for my very heavy periods. I was bleeding heavily for 7-8 days per month and had horrendous PMS. I would faint due to low blood pressure and had anameia She suggested the Mirena which I was very hesitant about as I didn't want a "foreign body" in me. It needs replacing every 5 years as the hormones start to run low but other than that, I've never had any trouble with it. I had mine changed in 2005, and will need it doing again next year. I would recommend that you change your GP and get a second opinon, especially if you haven't had children yet but if the second opinion agrees with the first, then go for it! You won't regret it."

Since the Mirena coil is a foreign body how does it react inside?does it smell? Doc is saying Mirena is my last option since I am 23 - never had kids and have serious problems with my periods every month. Tried many pills and now only limited to the Mirena due to bad migraines. Since it is a foreign body would this cause you to smell or your body reject it? I am just thinking of when a kid gets a bead or something stuck in their nose etc it starts to smell? I know it sounds silly but I would like to know. If you are or have been put on the Mirena how did it make you feel?

well_bevved replied: "the mirena coil my last option as I couldn't be put on any pill due to some migraine medication I take. Since I had it inserted I haven't noticed I had it! I rarely have periods only a very light spotting very occasionally. I do sometimes get cramps at what would be my normal cycle but very mild, certainly no smell! The only thing I would say was that when it was inserted it was very uncomfortable the moment it is placed inside and the cervix opens. Its like a very extreme period pain in one go and I almost passed out and had bad cramps for the rest of the day. After that I was fine and had no problems sine. The female doctor and nurse put me at ease and you go for a check up so many wks later. Hope that helps"

Will the Mirena coil really work and be the miracle I need? I'm 23, had severe painful and extremely heavy periods for as long as I can remember. I have tried just about everything - cannot take combined pill as I suffer from migraines. I have took Cerazette and Femulen as they are both progestin pills - I had a nightmare with both of them felt like I was having a stroke on Femulen and had swollen legs. I am healthy and exercise regularly so I cannot understand all these period problems I have. I've had tests and they are all fine. Doc is now saying the Mirena coil? But I am sure the coil has the same hormones that cerazette and femulen have and they made me feel so lousy. SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASSSSEEE

brittany replied: "NO I DONT THINK SOOO I have the mirena, if anything my cramps have gotten worse, though my blood flow became lighter. Try the depo shot.... I liked that. But you can only be on it so long, because its not good for your bones, you have to make sure you take in calcium. The mirena is a foreign object in your body, so it depends on how your body reacts, all I have to say is thats not the funnest thing to have done. Good luck"

Interested in experiences of the IUS (Mirena) coil...? Hi, I was recently taken off the combined pill due to migraines and put onto Cerazette, the mini pill. I'm having real problems with it - specifically weight gain (half a stone in two weeks!) so I have decided to opt for a Mirena coil. Have any of you found that it helped avoid the side effects you get from the Pill? What about its effect (if at all) on your weight? Any general comments? Thanks. Just to add - I have PCOS so rarely have periods anyway, I only had 'periods' due to the combined pill so the IUS idea is not related to anything menstruation-wise. Thanks so far!

ChickRN 4 Choice replied: "The Mirena IUD (IUS) contains the same hormone that is in your mini pill, so therefore there is a likely hood of experiencing the same side effects. You may want to consider the Paraguard IUD- copper IUD. This does not contain any hormone, so your body does what it wants to do naturally. No crazy side effects like you get with synthetic hormones. "

Trust Me I'm a Doctor ♥ replied: "I have had a Mirena coil for 2 years to control very heavy bleeding. Its great for that, now I have no periods really but I put on about 10lbs virtually overnight and my libido is quite low now but I'm in my 40s so that may be totally unrelated. I'm afraid if you gained weight on the mini pill you will probably gain weight with Mirena too. Why not just have a "normal" IUD ie a non-hormone one unless you have heavy periods that need sorting out?"

Any girls out there with Mirena coil? I'm looking to find out more about Mirena side-effects from women that have had similar problems with hormonal contraception: 1. Tried depo - gained a stone for the first time in my life! 2. Then implanon, lost half a stone with huge difficulty but couldn't shift the remaning half. Plus the loss of sex drive and sore breasts for 6 months. No mood swings of any kind though 3. Tried cerazette, gained 5 pounds in a week mostly around my tummy and my arms Now I'm considering Mirena. I can't do combined pill because of migraines and a few other problems. By the way, I'm naturally very skinny, size 6-8. I'm very physically active due to the nature of my job (dancer) and I also exercise 3-5 times a week at the gym. I don't eat sugar at all cos I don't like it and my diet is very balanced and based on Mediterranean cooking (salads, pure protein, not too much wheat, etc). I rarely eat junk food.

Rhianna replied: "Of all the hormone contraceptives, the Mirena coil seems to have the lesser side effects. With Mirena a much lower dose of hormone is released than when you take the Pill (about 1/7th strength), and it goes directly to the lining of the womb, rather than through the blood stream where it may lead to the common progesterone-type side effects. Some people experience weight gain with hormone contraceptives, some don't. It's trail and error. The rest is trail and error I'm afraid, every contraception works differently for everyone. Comparing experiences isn't much use as everyone reacts differently."

hg replied: "Hi i have had the marina coil (UDI) for about 3 years now. And i have to say its the best thing ever. When i had it put in for the first 2 weeks you do bleed and you might have some spotting, but after a month its total bliss. No period pain, No periods every month (i get mine about 3 times a year and they last about 3 days max, they are very light and pain free), No mood swings (PMS). I would strongly reccommend this to anyone. I have not gain any weight due to the marina. So good luck."

Jen B replied: "The first thing you need to do is figure out why your sex drive is low and try to help get it back. I was in your situation and it's not fun without being horny and feeling in the mood when needed. I also felt like my orgasms (if I would even get one) were really weak. Probably because of my sex drive. However, I tried exercising and dieting but nothing seemed to be working. I thought I was screwed. I then found something just as amazing as the vibrator. My friend at work told me about this stuff she took to raise her sex drive. It was a natural herbal supplement and was I lucky to of found it. Theres no side effects and the sex drive is just tremendous along with orgasms that are blasting. The stuff is called Hersolution pills. At the time I saved money on them at herenhancement.com What I did was tried out for 3 months and that was really it. I found taking them every other day or so was the best to stretch it out. After the months were up, I was back to normal with a beating sex drive and my orgasm strength in increased so much. Well good luck and I hope this helps."

Mirena- personal experiences? I'm thinking of getting a Mirena IUS fitted, and want to know about people's real life experiences with it. I'm allergic to latex I tried the Depo shot and hated how it made me feel I have migraines so can't take the combined pill The progesterone-only-pill makes me a moody b*tch I'm 23, never had children, don't smoke, have very heavy periods (and possibly endometriosis) and need contraception to avoid pregnancy, not to avoid STDs So what do you reckon? Should I try the Mirena coil?

Ivy replied: "i have no idea, but im wondering the same thing and keeping an eye on this question lol i have all the same difficulties as you do it sucks"

hottmess102680 replied: "I have had Mirena for 2 years and for me it has been a love/hate relationship. The first 6 months were hell.Off and on spotting and terrible cramps. After that though, all has been well.I haven't had a period or cramps in 18 months.I do not have any side effects to speak of.The only thing I don't like is sometimes during sex my man and I can feel it but it's worth it.Also,I've had 2 kids and I think you have to have at least 1 to get it."

Periods are unbareable - doc giving me pills that don't work.? I am 22 & for as long as I can remember my periods have been awful - really heavy (cant leave the house on first day), really painful, BAD pms i.e. moods, bloating, eating like a maniac, crying etc. Then when they are gone I am back to my happy, energetic self. Anyway the doctor has tried me on progestin only pills over the past year which have all been awful and made me bleed constantly. I suffer from migraines so my choice is limited. The last one I tried was Femulen - I came off it due to a sever migraine where my face was actually numb. I have spoke to the doc and he is now saying the mirena coil? thing is I havent had kids and I cannot bare to be put on something that is going to make me miserable again. I have had various ultrasounds etc and nothing has shown. Should I ask to have a hysteroscope so the doc can actually see whats going on rather than fobbing me off? sorry for the TMI but I also suffer from very heavy discharge when I am not on any pills. Again I have had many tests etc and have only had 1 sexual partner - and all the tests are always clear.

Amanda replied: "I think you should go see a OBGYN because they normally know more about those areas. I'm really sorry for your pain, I also suffer from excruciating periods."

wiseman/guru replied: "If one set of pills don't work go back for others, until you found one that does the trick. There are thousands on the market. Peace."

Hollywood replied: "Sorry to hear about that. Really, it must suck terribly. As of for the pain, i actually used my step mother's prescription pills that she uses since she had surgery to relieve pain. WORKED AMAZINGLY ! your average pain killer probably won't work on you if they didn't work on me"

catnbird replied: "maybe its time to see another doctor, you are entitled to another opinion. there may be something going on that has been missed. i know i would go and see another doctor. have they checked for endometritis?? keep searching for an answer."
